Malayala Manorama goes Mobile!

Nokia in a tie up with Malayala Manorama has launched a first of its kind a ‘Vernacular’ online news portal that will be available exclusively on Nokia handsets. You can access the site with any GPRS enabled Nokia handsets.

Download the application by typing MM to 5555 on which you would receive a link which downloads the application on the Nokia handset. For the time being national and International news will be updated every 30 minutes in Malayalam language across categories of news such as sports, travel, music, astrology and movies amongst others.

You can access the news content from anywhere. Location is not a limitation that’s what makes it a good product. So you could be a south based person in Mumbai battling the rain and reading Malayala Manorama on your cell phone and finding out the climate is beautiful and no showers are expected for a long time ;-)

Nokia also plans to do the same in 10 other vernacular languages which include – Hindi, Punjabi, Bengali, Oriya, Assamese, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada. All would be in tie-ups with the local news papers of that region.

As many Indians (even though English speaking) prefer their news in their local language, it is a great way to capture customers for Nokia. The good part is that they update it regularly so its offering you more than your morning paper news which is actually what happened last night or the previous day. People are getting more net and mobile savvy and are realizing more uses of a cell phone other than just call and message. In a country like India where there are more than 5million new handsets per month, and India being such a diverse country in terms of area, religion and language, Nokia seems to be bang on by providing content from news publishers that are already popular by readers which can now be carried on your mobile phone.
